According to the Associated Press, a New York state trooper died following a truck accident on the Thruway on December 17.
On December 16, trooper David Cunniff, 35, was inside his patrol car behind the vehicle he had pulled over on Interstate 90’s eastbound lanes, according to the AP. A truck subsequently struck from behind his car and he was partially thrown from the cruiser.
Cunniff reportedly suffered massive head trauma and had to be airlifted to the Albany Medical Center, where he died the following day.
Police said that alcohol and weather did not factor into the crash, which remains under investigation. Cunniff’s vehicle was stopped near Exit 27 in Amsterdam, about 30 miles northwest of Albany, with its emergency lights on.
The truck reportedly slammed into the back of the cruiser, then continued to move into the vehicle that Cunniff had pulled over, dragging it 75 yards and landing on top of it.
According to the AP, a 57-year-old from Warren County, the driver of the vehicle being pulled over, was in fair condition at the Albany hospital as of last week.
