Sadly, each year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, hundreds of people are killed in large bus accidents while more than 8,000 people are injured.
While accidents involving buses are not as common as other crashes, aside from death, they can lead to broken bones, spinal cord injuries and brain injuries. This is because buses are much larger and weigh more than other vehicles on the road, meaning collisions can be more violent, injuring not only passengers on the buses, but other drivers.
It should be noted that a 2007 study conducted by the Center for National Truck and Bus Statistics found that of the 354 people killed in bus accidents that year, more than 200 were occupants of vehicles other than the bus involved. Additionally, 85 people were pedestrians or bicyclists, while 21 were bus passengers and 18 were bus drivers.
Unfortunately, New York and New Jersey have some of the highest bus accident rates in the country, as public transportation is more popular in those states than in other areas in the country.
Two Injured in Rockland County TOR Bus Accident
We bring up bus accidents because on March 20, two people were injured when a Rockland TOR bus crashed into a car near Rockland Community College.
According to LoHud.com, the crash occurred around 12:30 p.m., when the car stopped to turn into a driveway and was rear-ended. The bus was reportedly heading from Nyack to Suffern. Nobody aboard the bus was injured, but two people in the vehicle were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern for treatment.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
Working with an Attorney Following a Bus Accident
Remember, if you are ever injured in a transportation accident, it may be a good idea to speak to an attorney who can determine if negligence was involved. If another driver and/or a transportation provider harm you, you may be able to hold him or her, or it, liable and seek damages.
If you are injured, money obtained through a lawsuit can be used to pay for rehabilitation and therapy. KGG lawyer Barry S. Kantrowitz assists personal injury victims who have been hurt by inattentive drivers.
