According to WNBC-TV, the families of two Korean War veterans in Long Island are furious with a nursing home over alleged neglect.
The family members say that their loved ones suffered gruesome deaths last year—in one case, a former soldier died because his bedsores grew large and deep. WNBC said the bedsores were so large, at one point a human hand could fit inside the victim’s skin.
The former soldier reportedly lived at the Suffolk Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing for several years. When he died in March 2013, bedsores and ulcers covered most of his backside. He reportedly went into cardiac arrest after a septic infection attacked his respiratory system.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that he was neglected,” the man’s granddaughter told WNBC.
Another veteran with dementia died after the nursing home staff lost sight of him and he accidentally hanged himself while trying to get out of a wheelchair restraint. The man was supposed to be monitored every 15 minutes by Suffolk staff. An investigation revealed that staff members did not check on the man for nearly an hour.
Representatives of the Suffolk Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing declined to answer specific questions about the fatalities or safety inside the home, according to WNBC.
My Family Member Has Suffered From Nursing Home Abuse or Neglect
Nursing home abuse and neglect is something that needs to be taken seriously. If a nursing home fails to protect its residents from bedsores or does not properly monitor patients, than it should be held liable for negligence.
