According to NorthJersey.com, a 54-year-old Hillsdale man was charged with assault and reckless driving after a car accident on July 15 in Westwood that seriously injured a 46-year old Belleville man.
The website reported that the crash took place when Michael Baba drove through a red light at the intersection of Lafayette and Washington avenues, into the side of an SUV being driven by Niall O’Hagan.
According to NorthJersey.com, the accident sent O’Hagan’s SUV towards the intersection’s corner, where it flopped and landed on its roof in front of a nearby home. O’Hagan was reportedly transported via helicopter to Hackensack University Medical Center and is recovering from “serious bodily injuries”.
The accident remains under investigation; authorities said that they are awaiting urine and blood toxicology reports from Baba. As of last week, he had been charged with assault by auto, reckless driving, failure to obey a traffic control device and having an unregistered motor vehicle.
Aside from criminal charges, if Baba’s actions were negligent and led to O’Hagan’s injuries, he could be held liable for the accident through a civil suit.
