As we reported last month—head-on vehicle crashes are incredibly dangerous, often resulting in death and serious personal injuries like broken bones, spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries.
Many of these accidents occur because of driving while under the influence, distracted driving and the failure of car parts or vehicle defects.
According to Yahoo!, 360 people are killed each year in wrong-way collisions. Tragically, the New York Daily News reported that on August 12, two people were killed in a wrong-way crash on the New York State Thruway in Rockland County. One of the victims was identified as an off-duty police officer.
According to the News, the crash happened about 7 a.m., in Suffern, and involved a Dodge pickup truck and a SUV. One of the vehicles was heading south in the northbound lane when it struck the other vehicle, investigators said.
Neither vehicle had passengers. The accident remains under investigation.
