Have you checked out a rental car and been asked by the agent to purchase additional insurance coverage? Should you? It really comes down to whether or not the agreement you have with your personal car insurer covers rental vehicles.
CNN had an interesting story about this recently, saying that the costs of additional insurance coverage for a rental vehicle can add up to anywhere from $15 to $30 per day. However, the news outlet reported that many times, the coverage is not necessary.
The network reported that personal insurers cover a majority of drivers who may be spending money unwisely. In addition, in cases where personal auto insurance companies do not cover people, their credit card companies could cover them.
According to CNN, major credit card issuers Visa, American Express, MasterCard and Discover provide some form of rental car insurance coverage to customers. The network reported that to receive coverage, you must place your entire car rental bill on your credit card and decline the supplemental coverage offered by the rental company. Note, with some cards, this coverage may not be available, so you will want to check with your company to ensure coverage.
Remember, if you are renting a car for business purposes, your personal auto insurer and credit card company may not cover damages caused by an accident. In any scenario, your best option may be to check in with your personal insurer and credit card issuer to see what coverage is provided.
